Selecting the right subtitling format for Japanese content distribution is essential and depends on your service provider or broadcaster requirements. Japanese subtitling specifications

These include limitations like: no more than two lines per subtitle; maximum total length of the subtitle in characters (most often 37); minimum and maximum duration of the subtitle (the duration for which the Japanese subtitle is being shown on screen), frame gap, glyph list, line treatment, positional data, timing-to-audio, timing to shot changes, dialogue that crosses shot changes and many more. Extensive name conventions and glossaries are developed to ensure subtitling consistency.
Other considerations for Japanese subtitling are the ratio between original and translated Japanese text and the alphabet Japanese language specific characters. Altogether, these limitations represent a hurdle which makes recreating the original content into Japanese accurately enough on the one hand, and making the Japanese subtitles compliant with the technical requirements stated above, quite a challenge.
